  • Wendy Smith, clinical associate professor and associate dean of curriculum planning and assessment at the USC School of Social Work, recently visited Cuba on an educational mission organized by Rep. Karen Bass, MSW '15, to learn about the country's child welfare and juvenile justice systems, as well as its culture, people and arts scene.

  • Jacquelyn McCroskey is the John Milner Professor of Child Welfare at the USC School of Social Work, co-director of the Children's Data Network, and a commissioner of the Los Angeles County Commission on Children & Families. Denise Herz is a professor at California State University, Los Angeles.

    Each year, thousands of youth enter the juvenile justice system in Los Angeles County.

  • I just attended the White House Policy Briefing on Youth Homelessness. At this meeting I got to meet Kristopher Sharp, who recently wrote about his experiences as a homeless youth. What was striking about hearing him speak was his pride, not in getting housing, but in the fact that he was going to be graduating from college in a few weeks. And this got me thinking. College. Right. That is what so many homeless youth need.

  • A multidisciplinary team of graduate students representing the USC School of Social Work, USC Marshall School of Business and the Keck School of Medicine of USC won the fourth annual USC Global Health Case Competition.

    Jay Lytton, MSW/MBA candidate; Mitch Otu, MD/MBA candidate; Amy Patel, MBA candidate; Edwin Kulubya, MD/MBA candidate; and Fereshte (Nina) Kharazmi, MPH candidate, comprised the winning team.

  • Eric Rice is an assistant professor at the USC School of Social Work.

  • It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it. This saying suggests that good decision making and careful planning can help you deal with some of life’s challenges.

    I’d like to think that I make good decisions and engage in careful planning. I consider my options, gather evidence, weigh the pros and cons, and make a decision followed by a plan. However, I didn’t take this approach when planning for retirement until a few years ago.

  • Michael Brown in Ferguson. Eric Garner in New York. Tamir Rice in Cleveland. And more recently, Anthony Hill in Atlanta and Tony Robinson in Madison.

    Recent incidents of unarmed black men killed by police officers have spurred protests and refueled the “race conversation.” Deep-seated prejudices and systemic discrimination have become topics of discussion, moving many to ask questions and draw lessons from events like those in Ferguson, Missouri.

  • Already in the first weeks of 2015, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the county's acting Chief Executive Officer have taken action to improve collaboration and make structural changes that should speed up child welfare system reforms.
