  • The USC School of Social Work has been awarded $50,000 by The Ahmanson Foundation to support scholarships for military veterans.

USC is one of only 25 colleges and universities selected to receive funds totaling $1.25 million through the newly established Ahmanson Veteran Scholarship Initiative. The grants are meant to help students eligible for the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 attend and graduate from private institutions of higher education.

  • An anonymous donor has pledged $1 million to the USC School of Social Work to establish the Cleofas and Victor Ramirez Professor of Practice, Policy, Research and Advocacy for the Latino Population.

The endowment was made in honor of the donor’s parents, a homemaker and field worker who did not have formal educations. However, they strongly believed in the value of education and served as the driving force behind the donor’s success in receiving a Master of Social Work at USC.

  • Each year, the USC School of Social Work honors those faculty and graduating students who have made significant achievements in their academic careers and contributions to the USC and at-large communities. This year’s Dean’s Recognition Ceremony recognized new and past student leadership, those on the Dean's List and Dean's Honorable Mentions. Below are those who received scholarships and********** awards.

  • For Maril Lloyd Sun, meeting Flynn, dean of the USC School of Social Work, changed the way he now looks at the world.

As chairman of Maxwell College in Arcadia, Calif., Sun understands the value of education. But the businessman had never given social work as a profession and area of research a second thought until Flynn showed him how far-reaching and significant social work’s influence could be, domestically and internationally.

  • For Paul Beigelman, giving to the University of Southern California is a top priority.

“Next to my family, USC is the No. 1 recipient of favors of my trust,” he said. “I bleed cardinal and gold.”

That’s why Beigelman, MD ’48, chose to honor his late wife, Irene Beigelman, MSW ’57, with a gift of $25,000 toward the establishment of a scholarship at the USC School of Social Work for a Master of Social Work student who plans to work in the health field.

  • For the last four decades, Marleen Wong has dedicated herself to the mental health of traumatized children.

  • Physical injuries and the psychological effects of war can have devastating consequences on the sexual functioning of service members and veterans.

Despite recent advances in protective gear, members of the U.S. military face a serious risk of genital injuries due to improvised explosives and other unique aspects of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Psychosocial challenges, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, can also exacerbate issues with sexual functioning and libido.

  • When a traumatic football injury led to more than a month in the hospital and 15 surgeries for Wyatt Driscoll, the 17-year-old and his family got to know the U.S. health care system all too well.

  • Beth Lucas, MSW ’98, has joined the USC School of Social Work Board of Councilors.

An ardent advocate for at-risk youth, Lucas has dedicated her career to bettering their lives through two decades of work with teens in group homes, gang members in schools, victims of domestic violence, the severely and persistently mentally ill, and kids in the foster and adoption systems.

  • The USC School of Social Work’s Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families (CIR) has received a grant from the Newman’s Own Foundation to gather critical data that will help identify where resources are needed most for veterans and their families and how best to serve them.
