Job Description

Background:
The Bluthenthal Lab is looking for graduate students to support efforts on the following studies:
1. Data collection on a retrospective electronic medical records review study on injection drug use related infections.
2. Systematic review on long-term impacts of racially discriminatory historical US policies on current community/neighborhood conditions
3. Additional literature reviews related to ongoing Bluthenthal Lab projects

General tasks for Project 1
•Review electronic medical records (EMR)
•Abstract relevant data into REDCAP
•Communicate project updates
•Work independently on assigned tasks and collaborate with study team as needed
•Conduct literature reviews on injection drug use related infections and summarize findings
•Assist with IRB processing
•Run descriptive analyses

General tasks for Projects 2 and 3
•Communicate with librarians about literature search strategy
•Screen abstracts with inclusion/exclusion criteria
•Full text review, data extraction, and summarize findings
•Communicate project updates
•Work independently on assigned tasks and collaborate with study team as needed

Timing/Hours
6-10 hours/week minimum (fully remote) Fall 2024-Spring 2025 internship (2 consecutive semesters), with option for ongoing participation beyond that timeframe pending performance review

Professional Development:
•Work on projects can be utilized as MPH practicum or directed research units (according to program-specific requirements)
•Eligible for letter of recommendation based on performance review
•Students may have the opportunity to be co-authors on manuscripts developed from the Project 1 dataset and literature reviews in future semesters.

Qualifications

Overall Competencies:
-Ability to meet deadlines to ensure data collection is completed during established timeline
-Willingness to expand theoretical and methodological knowledge
-Strong communication skills – including written updates and weekly team member meetings
-6-10 hours/week minimum
-Ability to work well within a team

Necessary competencies for project 1:
-Previous experience with data collection via electronic medical records (EMR) review is required
-Previous training in HIPAA and GCP required
-Familiarity with ORCHID and clinical research preferred
-Familiarity with harm reduction and injection drug use related infections preferred
-Proficiency in SAS, SPSS, STATA or other data analysis software preferred

Highly preferred competencies for projects 2 & 3:
-Familiarity with Covidence or other review software
-Familiarity with structural racism and racially discriminatory historical US policies (Project 2)
-Familiarity with harm reduction and injection drug use related infections (Project 3)
-Experience working on published literature review, narrative review, or systematic review
