Project Summary
This study aims to compare the effect of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) to that of local employment services on employment, income, and long-term self-sufficiency among formerly homeless adults living in supportive housing.
Methodology/Overview
The SHIPS study is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) designed to determine whether participation in IPS improves the employment, income, health, and self-sufficiency of people who are recently homeless and living in supportive housing. This is the first RCT designed to implement IPS in a supportive housing program. The study intends to measure the effectiveness of evidence-based supportive employment compared to the usual vocational services offered in a supportive housing program. Outcome measures include employment (any competitive employment, weeks employed, earnings), housing stability, health, and applications for benefits and any resulting awards. The study will last three years and enroll about 200 people receiving supportive housing services from the People Assisting the Homeless (PATH).
