Grand Challenges

  • A mixture of excitement and nervousness fills the air. Young people from all over the world present ideas for everything from mobile phone apps that help farmers wirelessly manage irrigation systems to a concept for a zero-emission freight corridor along a busy highway.

At stake: cash prizes and the opportunity to have their ideas become reality.

  • From mass incarceration, climate change and an aging population to immigration, mental illness and rising income inequality, the most pressing issues facing America have something fundamental in common: the social factor. As a call to action on these and other urgent problems, the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW) has launched the Grand Challenges for Social Work.

  • The USC School of Social Work has kick-started a national Grand Challenges initiative to identify and highlight the most serious societal ills that social work can – and should – address.

Major challenges exist: fragmented systems of health and mental health care, problems of social stigma and oppression, a need to reform the child welfare and foster care sector. Where the social fabric is fraying or worn, social work researchers and practitioners are striving to address issues that plague society.
