Learn about the use of dynamic systems and attachment theories in understanding aspects of brain and social development in transition age youth.
Drs. Wendy Smith and Doni Whitsett will discuss the integration of child and adolescent developmental theory with attachment theory to provide a multi-dimensional practice perspective for working with youth leaving state systems of foster care. The effects of trauma and maltreatment on development and attachment will be considered, along with impacts of foster care on adolescent identity development.
Wendy B. Smith has been in clinical practice for 40 years. She is director of instructional
enhancement and associate clinical professor at the USC School of Social Work. Smith writes and speaks widely on this subject; her book, Youth Leaving Foster Care: A Developmental, Relationship-Based Approach to Practice, was published in 2011.
Doni P. Whitsett is a clinical professor at the USC School of Social Work. Whitsett's areas of specialty include trauma, working with cult-involved clients, human sexuality and neurobiology.
