California Social Welfare Archives Annual Awards Luncheon

The California Social Welfare Archives salutes outstanding social welfare contributions, with speaker Rose-Margaret Orrantia, former executive director of Indian Child and Family Services.

Orrantia, a tribal elder, will receive the George D. Nickel Award for Outstanding Contributions to Social Welfare, as well as share her experience from more than 30 years working with tribal and non-tribal communities in California. She was director of Indian Child and Family Services, serving San Diego and Riverside counties, advocating for families by testifying for the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs, presenting to the California Welfare Directors Association, and training social workers across the state on culturally competent approaches to child welfare services for Native American children and families. She currently serves at the Academy for Professional Excellence program of the San Diego State University School of Social Work as a member of the Tribal STAR team.

Yolie Flores, president and CEO of Communities for Teaching Excellence, will receive the George D. Nickel Award for Outstanding Professional Services by a Social Worker.

Bruce Jansson, professor at the USC School of Social Work, will receive the Frances Lomas Feldman Excellence in Education Award.
