Recruitment Challenges in Culturally Diverse Societies: The Norwegian Context

Immigrants have an unemployment rate for above the native born population in most European countries. Among barriers confronted by immigrants are hiring practices in organizations. One possible source for discrimination lies in the widespread use of the employment interview as the preferred selection method among employers, and which introduce a lot of subjectivity and bias in the decision process. This presentation will focus on how norms for self-presentation in employment interviews differ across cultures based on a multinational study and studies of immigrants living in Norway, and the implications of such differences for employment decisions. It will show how experimental studies on how the ethnicity and acculturation of immigrants impact on their chances of being hired.
This colloquium will feature a special presentation from Dr. Gro Sandal, professor of psychology and leader of the Society and Workplace Diversity Research Group at the University of Bergen, Norway.
RSVP before October 29.
