In honor of Social Work Month this March, the USC School of Social Work Office of Professional Development is hosting a FREE CEU workshop on military culture.

In addition to providing an organizational, contextual and historical overview of the military, this workshop examines complex issues that pertain to military culture, such as warrior identity and ethos, motivations for military service, patterns of socialization, and diversity issues and their policy implications. This course also discusses ethical considerations and reporting obligations for behavioral health providers working with military-affiliated clients. Dr. Kimberly Finney, clinical associate professor at the USC School of Social Work, aims to provide an informed perspective on direct practice, policy and advocacy implications for service members, veterans and their families.

Finney is a board-certified clinical psychologist and is also a retired U.S. Air Force officer. Her final assignment was as the flight commander of the mental health clinic at Los Angeles Air Force Base in California. She was responsible for the delivery of mental health, family advocacy and substance abuse services to the 8,300 beneficiaries served by the base's clinic. Finney left active duty service in 1994 to pursue a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. She continued her service as a member of the Air Force Reserves, and during this time was chosen by the American Association of Blood Banks as an accreditation inspector for civilian and military blood banks. She was one of only four Air Force psychologists and one of approximately 150 psychologists nationwide who were credentialed to prescribe medications. Maj. Finney has been a chief of mental health services, a mental health flight commander and AFSPC mental health consultant.
