The current school landscape is experiencing overwhelming psychosocial needs of students, caregivers who are uncertain how to support youth, and school systems struggling to develop a responsive plan. COVID-19 has only served to exacerbate symptoms of trauma, grief, and loss for students and families. This session will provide an overview of trauma sensitive mindfulness techniques from neurobiological theory to a variety of specific practices that can be taught to students struggling with grief and trauma.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify how grief and trauma intersect in the school setting.
  • Explain the neurobiological impact of trauma, grief, and mindfulness.
  • Learn and practice trauma sensitive approaches to mindfulness.

About the Presenters

Kerry Doyle, DSW, LICSW, RYT-200 is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Southern California Suzanne Dworak- Peck School of Social Work. Her practice experience includes both mental health and health clinical social work in the hospital, school, and private practice settings. As a wellness trainer for a national employee assistance program, Kerry provided workshops on stress management, emotional intelligence, leadership, mindfulness and yoga. Her professional interests also include the study of trauma-sensitive mindfulness, compassion fatigue, and trauma responsive outcomes. She received her undergraduate degree from Brown University, her Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University, and her Doctorate in Clinical Social Work from University of Pennsylvania.


Lisa Wobbe-Veit, MSW is a Clinical Associate Professor at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, currently managing Master’s candidates as the South Regional Field Director for the school’s Virtual Academic Center (VAC). A USC faculty member since 2011, Wobbe-Veit played a vital role in the establishment of course materials and field procedure including co-developing a 12- week trauma responsive School Social Work Field Training Program. She previously served as a faculty member for the University of Central Florida School of Social Work for four years.

The University of Southern California (USC) Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, an accredited school of social work as defined in Business and Professions Code section 4991.2, meets the requirements set forth in section 4996.22(d) (1). The School is recognized by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as a continuing education provider pursuant to Section 1887.4.3.


CREDIT DESIGNATION
*California licensed social workers, marriage and family therapists and professional clinical counselors attending can earn 2 CEUs. Participants must attend the virtual workshop and take the post-event test and evaluation to receive 2 CEUs. If you are licensed outside the state of California, we urge you to check with your licensing board to see if the training outlined meets continuing education requirements in your state.
