This 2-day training will discuss the process of engagement and the important role of caregivers and teams/collaboration in the assessment, intervention and treatment of children’s mental health concerns that are sometimes difficult to approach and understand. Abuse, neglect, and other trauma often have negative impacts upon the emotional and mental health of children (including infants, toddlers and preschoolers), adolescents and families. As a result, it is important that social workers promptly identify the mental health needs of children, adolescents, and families served by the child welfare system. This training will outline the major childhood and adult diagnostic categories and updates of the DSM-5. In addition, participants will learn to recognize the possible behavioral, psychological, emotional, and social manifestations that may be present in children and adolescents who have been exposed to abuse, neglect, or trauma. Participants will learn about the assessment of children, adolescents and families needing mental health services and the importance of expeditiously linking them to proper mental health services. Participants will become familiar with the DSM-5. Vignettes and case examples will be used to illustrate the behavioral indicators of psychopathological disturbances and demonstrate the application of the DSM-5.
