California Social Welfare Archives’ 31st Annual Awards Reception

The USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work cordially invites you to attend the California Social Welfare Archives’ 31st Annual Awards Reception on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the USC Galen Center Founders’ Club with a reception and light supper buffet at 5:00 p.m. and a guest speaker and awards presentation at 6:00 p.m.

This year’s honorees are:

Sonia Nazario - Guest speaker and recipient of the 2017 George D. Nickel Award for Outstanding Contributions to Social Welfare

Enrique’s Journey & America’s Immigration Dilemma

Sonia Nazario is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and activist focusing on social issues and author of national best-selling book Enrique's Journey, a true story about a young Honduran boy’s search for his mother who left home to find work in the US to pay for food for her starving family. Her advocacy on behalf of immigrant children has earned her several humanitarian awards. There will be a book signing following the program.

E. Stephen Voss, MSW - Recupient of the 2017 George D. Nickel Award for Outstanding Professional Services by a Social Worker
Presented by: Stephen James Holt, Chair, Board of Directors, International Institute of Los Angeles

President and CEO of International Institute of Los Angeles (IILA) since 1993. Founded over 100 years ago to assist newly-arrived immigrants integrating into their new lives in Los Angeles, IILA has provided social services to assist hundreds of thousands of immigrants and other low-income clients achieve self-sufficiency.

Murali D. Nair, DSW, PhD - Recipient of the 2017 Frances Lomas Feldman Excellence in Education Award
Presented by: Tory Cox, Clinical Associate Professor, USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work

Frances Lomas Feldman Excellence in Education Award Murali D. Nair, DSW, PhD - a clinical professor at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work since 2012, Dr. Nair's exceptional student engagement methods have earned him the respect of his colleagues and deep admiration of his students. His honors include being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Columbia University School of Social Work, serving as a Senior Fulbright Scholar and receiving the President’s Volunteer Action Award from the White House.
