Symposium: Damaging Minds and Bodies
Trauma, Violence and the Criminal Justice System
We invite you to attend an upcoming symposium, "Damaging Minds and Bodies: Trauma, Violence and the Criminal Justice System", on February 10-11, 2017.
The program, hosted at UCLA, will address the health and disabling effects of police violence and incarceration in the U.S., particularly for communities of color, people with disabilities, immigrant populations, and youth.
The primary sponsor and event organizer is Repair, an LA-based non-profit organization that co-sponsored the 2015 Law Review symposium at UCLA Law, "Examining the Roots of Human Trafficking and Exploitation".
Following up on suggestions from the 2015 symposium attendees, our upcoming symposium continues the conversation about the relationship between criminal justice, sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. Our program on Saturday the 11th includes a round-table on this subject, featuring participation by survivors of sexual exploitation by police. In addition our program on Friday the 10th will include a plenary on the juvenile justice system, inclusive of dialogue about the sexual exploitation of youth.
Co-sponsors of the symposium include the UCLA American Indian Studies Center, the UCLA Disability Studies Program, the UCLA Law Youth and Justice Clinic, and the National Association of Social Workers- USC Unit.
We hope to offer 8.5 CEUS (no charge) for social workers (application pending) so this is a great opportunity for LCSW's seeking CEUS well as of course for students, staff/ faculty. Three contact hours through the California Board of Registered Nursing will also be available for nurses.
The program is free and open to the public, and we hope you will distribute the attached flyer widely. A pre-registration link and the preliminary program are online here.
Friday’s symposium will be held at the Charles E. Young Research Library Conference Room, while Saturday's symposium will be in Dodd Hall Room 147.
