Social Isolation as a Health Risk Among Older Adults

Dr. James Lubben of Boston College discusses the risks associated with social isolation among the older adult population.
Lubben is the inaugural holder of the Louise McMahon Ahearn Chair in Social Work at Boston College, where he serves as director of the doctoral program in social work. He is also the national director of the Hartford Doctoral Fellows Program in Geriatric Social Work and has actively promoted the development of both gerontology and social work by serving as a principal investigator or collaborator on more than $25 million in research and training grants. A leading scholar in social gerontology with an active research agenda examining social support networks among elderly populations, he developed the Lubben Social Network Scale, a measure designed for research and clinical use among older populations.
